What if McCain Chooses Fred Thompson for VP?

I ask the question because it isn't out of the question. They are good friends with a history. It would be a smart move on the Maverick's part to stilt up his lacking on conservative credentials. Could Thompson serve as the conservative concience? The ideological gravitas? Even...power behind the throne? How would the conservative base/blogosphere react?

Serious thought from Scott Ott:

Bring Fred Thompson on as vice president to serve as the Constitutional conscience of the administration -- an ideological gravitas behemoth -- who can do for President McCain what Dick Cheney has done for President Bush on foreign policy. Behind the scenes, Vice President Thompson offers President McCain private counsel, guided by our Founding Fathers, without drawing attention to himself. Mr. Thompson seems eminently qualified for such a role, eschewing publicity and advancing the cause which impelled him to mount his own White House bid.

But seriously...it is a possibility.

First...Mitt dropped out???? SERIOUSLY?????????

Secondly, As wonderful as it might be, I thought I had heard Thompson express his complete disinterest in the VP spot (I could be wrong).

Third, I think McCain is eying Rudy or Mitt (weird how we refer to most of the candidates by their first names now). As of a few minutes ago, I'm wondering if there was a McRomney pact made behind the scenes in the past few days.

First, I love the "Fred kicks Hillary out of the seat" gif n8 has up there.

Second, I have a theory about the current Republican bid for the White House (Disclaimer: I'm fully aware this means nothing in the grand scheme of things and I'm either waaaaay off track OR it's SSOOOOOO obvious that I'm the last to figure it out):

Super Tuesday was deemed by the party (behind the scenes) as the unofficial final exam, and all of the Republican candidates were aware of it. Thompson, Guiliani...the others that dropped out before the big day were fully aware they would not have gotten enough delegates to make the grade and knew not to spend any more time and money.

McCain got the highest marks, and became the unofficial "Chosen One" of the Republican bid.

Today, Romney is out. Soon Huckabee will be out, too. All former candidates will rally around McCain. That leaves only Mr. WhineyMan to oppose him, which leaves McCain essentially unopposed.

Why all of this?
A) McCain, being more of a moderate, can sway more fence straddlers to vote Republican. Credit can be given to the VP for any changes in McCains beliefs later on.
B) That moderate nominee paired with a conservative running mate will draw in even more support.
C) A party that shows a united effort is far more likely to attract the undecided crowd than a party that is fighting like schoolyard children (no names mentioned, but they're on the other side of that fence over there).

With less squabbling in the Republican ranks during individual campains, the party as a whole would be able to concentrate on November and give the country a solid, unified Republican front.
